4 local food you can enjoy in honour of Malaysia Day! | Zenyum MY

15 September 2022

Not to be mistaken with Merdeka (Independence) Day, this actually marks the joined day of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore to create the Malaysian Federation on 16 September 1963. However, Singapore left 2 years after and declared its independence.

Prior to 2010, Malaysia Day was only a public holiday in Sabah but has since been declared one for all states in Malaysia. So why not make the best of it by hunting for our local food in this food paradise city?

1. KL Hokkien Mee

First up on our list is the debatable Hokkien Mee! This dish has been claimed by many as to which is the original one but we’re here to share the best KL Hokkien Mee. In 1905, Wong Kian Lee (aka Ong Kim Lian) arrived in Kuala Lumpur and set up a store – selling the common pale-looking soupy stir-fried noodles from Fujian.

But with tough competition, he changed up his style to standout by using thick noodles and lots of dark soya sauce. Today, numerous stalls serve up good Hokkien Mee, so here’s one that scores 4.4 stars on Google.

Where: Damansara Uptown Hokkien Mee, Up-Town HQ

Address: 117, 119,121, Jalan SS 21/37, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia

2. Nasi Lemak

There is something about our local Nasi Lemak that can’t be compared anywhere else. The fluffy coconut rice and chicken marinate is not just any ‘fried chicken’!

This Nasi Lemak restaurant has been around for decades and is popular for a reason. Take a look at that delectable Ayam Goreng Berempah (spiced fried chicken) – definitely making our mouths water. You can even top up your plates with sambal sotong (chili squid) or paru goreng (fried beef lung).

Where: Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kg. Baru

Address: 8, Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

3. KL Chili Pan Mee

Looking for the best KL Chili Pan Mee is a skill – the chili, noodle texture, ikan bilis (anchovies) and soft-boiled egg all have to be perfect.

This restaurant has a quiet exterior but do not be fooled as the crowd wants one thing only, Chili Pan Mee. Approved by many as seen with its crowded lunch period and 4 stars google review, make sure not to skip this location while on your food hunt.

Where: Restoran Kin Kin

Address: 40, Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

4. Roti Canai

Nothing hits the sweet spot with our roti canai sambal even the ones in Singapore can’t come close. We can have it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper so it has to be a part of our list of local foods to hunt.

We’re recommending Mansion Tea Stall because it is raved about all over the internet! Famous for its Roti Canai Banjir special which is basically roti canai chopped up, drenched in curry and served with 2 eggs on the side. Of course, without missing out on the spoonful of sambal!

No food restrictions!

Do you know what all these food have in common? That’s right they can be enjoyed by anyone on their Zenyum smile journey!

We know that eating hard food such as peanuts (or crunchy ikan bilis) is not allowed when you are wearing metal braces as it could shift the brackets. But, no one really talks about the hassle of eating noodles and curry when you wear metal braces. The bands on your brackets always gets stained by curry and noodle strands are left dangling in between the wires.

Yucks! Best not to talk while eating.

Zenyum Invisible Braces on the other hand is hassle-free since it is removable and also a more affordable teeth straightening solution. You can enjoy all your local delights without any restrictions and with minimal pain since your teeth won’t be that sore!

Doesn’t that sound like the perfect plan for a foodie looking to straighten their teeth? You no longer have to hold yourself back from achieving your dream smile.
